A relaxed beginner’s course in Maori language for those with no previous background in te reo Māori through to those who already have some background in it and who wish to develop better speaking skills. Ideal for anyone who is interested in gaining a familiarity with the building blocks of te reo. You will learn cultural elements such as mihi (basic informal and formal greetings), whakatauki (proverbs) and kīwaha (idioms), including a variety specific to Ngāi Tahu (the tribe of the South Island). You will learn how to introduce yourself, express family relationships and hold a basic conversation in te reo Māori. You will become confident in creating basic sentences in te reo Māori and expanding on these. These classes blend a range of teaching techniques including waiata (songs), language games, and group activities. This is a highly recommended language option for those who wish to familiarise themselves with the indigenous language and culture of the local area.
